Organizing Grassroots To Build the Food Movement

A research paper for The Nell Newman Foundation by Ted Quaday.

We hope Ted's work will generate local, regional and even a national debate on our collective intentionality to "organize" and "train" food systems activists. Freely available to the public at large, the paper can be read and downloaded by following this link to a PDF. Please share with others. Young Heroes

Young Heroes has been charged with providing food and clothing to children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic in Swaziland.  Swaziland has a life expectancy of 32 years; the lowest in the world. The orphans of Swaziland number in the tens of thousands as an entire generation of parents have been taken by AIDS. Rather than group all the orphans into orphanages, Young Heroes maintains a roster of kids and pays a stipend to the foster parents, allowing the kids to grow up on homesteads.  This helps the kids maintain a direct connection to land and culture. This model is working extremely well and is giving the young generation of Swaziland the needed boost and staying power to survive through a generational tragedy. It is hoped that with the help of Young Heroes, evolving policies in Swaziland, and hard work, that an entire generation of Swaziland kids will survive to carry on their families' cultural traditions and remain connected to the land where they were raised.
