Real Food Media Project/Food Myth Busters – is a collaborative project that uses online videos,  web-based action and resource center and grassroots events to inspire, educate and expand the movement for sustainable food and farming. They aim to debunk myths about sustainability, spread stories of solutions and motivate millions to get involved in food system change.

Mother Jones – Foundation for National Progress is a nonprofit news organization that specializes in investigative, political and social justice reporting. Their mission is to produce revelatory journalism to inform and inspire a more just and democratic world.

Vermont Seed Breeding Project – The mission of the University of Vermont Extension is to improve the quality of life of Vermonters by providing research-based educational programs and practical information concerning Vermont communities, families and homes, farms, businesses, and the natural environment. The objective of this particular project is to develop spring and winter wheat varieties that are suited for organic management in northern New England soils and climatic conditions.

Organizing Grassroots To Build the Food Movement

A research paper for The Nell Newman Foundation by Ted Quaday.

We hope Ted's work will generate local, regional and even a national debate on our collective intentionality to "organize" and "train" food systems activists. Freely available to the public at large, the paper can be read and downloaded by following this link to a PDF. Please share with others. If information from the report is used in any way, please cite The Nell Newman Foundation as having the copyright and Ted Quaday as the author.

Young Heroes

Young Heroes has been charged with providing food and clothing to children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic in Swaziland.  Swaziland has a life expectancy of 32 years; the lowest in the world. The orphans of Swaziland number in the tens of thousands as an entire generation of parents have been taken by AIDS. Rather than group all the orphans into orphanages, Young Heroes maintains a roster of kids and pays a stipend to the foster parents, allowing the kids to grow up on homesteads.  This helps the kids maintain a direct connection to land and culture. This model is working extremely well and is giving the young generation of Swaziland the needed boost and staying power to survive through a generational tragedy. It is hoped that with the help of Young Heroes, evolving policies in Swaziland, and hard work, that an entire generation of Swaziland kids will survive to carry on their families' cultural traditions and remain connected to the land where they were raised.

Trout Unlimited: Alaska Bristol Bay Pebble Mine Project - TU's vision is to ensure that robust populations of native and wild cold water fish once again thrive within their North American range. The Bristol Bay Pebble Mine Project is poised to stop the proposed Pebble Mine from moving forward, and to keep the rich trout and salmon waters of Bristol Bay intact.

Lightfoot Industries - is a hybrid social enterprise that provides entrepreneurial training for teenagers.  They use a for-profit restaurant, retail line, and innovative curriculum to model social, environmental and fiscal responsibility.  High school accredited course work, project based learning and seminars incorporating service learning & sustainability. Lightfoot Industries methodology is intended to bring sustainable vocational training and excellent, affordable food - to strategic communities throughout the United States.

EcoTrust- Committed to inspiring fresh thinking that creates economic opportunity, social equity and environmental well-being. Ecotrust co-founded the world's first environmental ban and, started the world's first ecosystem investment fund. Ecotrust creates a range of programs in fisheries, forestry, food, farms and children's health as well as developing new scientific and  information tools to improve social, economic and  environmental decision making. Over nearly 20 years, Ecotrust has converted $80 million in grants into more than $500 million in capital for local people, businesses, and organizations from Alaska to California.

Cooperative Food Empowerment Directive: CoFed - A national cooperative network and training program committed to empowering students to create ethically-sourced, cooperatively-run food enterprises on college campuses. Their mission is to cultivate a more sustainable, community-oriented culture through college

Farm Aid: Farmer Resource Network - A part of Farm Aid, this organization was started 26 years ago by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp to raise awareness about the loss of family farms.  The program raises funds to help keep families on their land. Farmer Resource Network connects farmers to more than 500 organizations developing innovative approaches to producing, processing and marketing food from family

As You Sow - Founded in 1992, this program has grown into two divisions that strive to increase corporate accountability. The Environmental Enforcement Program seeks to reduce and remove carcinogenic exposures by pursuing compliance with California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act.  The Corporate Social Responsibility Program (CSRP) uses shareholder advocacy and the financial markets to catalyze positive change within publicly held companies.

FERN -Food and Environment Reporting Network - FERN is an independent, non-profit news organization that produces investigative reporting on food, agriculture, and environmental health. Their stories fall under the classic mandate of investigative reporting–to reveal corruption, abuse of power, and exploitation wherever it happens; to expose activities and subjects that the powerful work to keep hidden or which are simply overlooked by major media; and to give a voice to the voiceless.

Organic Seed Alliance - This group advances the ethical development and stewardship of the genetic resources of agricultural seed; accomplishing their goals through collaborative education, advisory services, and research programs with organic farmers and other seed professionals.

Center for Food Safety - The Center for Food Safety uses multifaceted strategies, including legal actions, submission of policy comments and public education to accomplish its goals of curtailing industrial agricultural production methods that harm human health and the environment, and to promote sustainable alternatives.

The Sierra Fund/Mining Mercury Clean-up Project - The Sierra Fund was established in 2001 as the only community foundation dedicated exclusively to saving the Sierra Nevada. They protect and preserve the Sierra through partnering with private donors and public agencies to increase conservation investments in the land, air, water and human resources in the area. California Climate & Action Network: CalCan - a coalition that advances policy solutions at the nexus of climate change and sustainable agriculture. They bring a sustainable agricultural perspective with their efforts aimed at increasing funding for research, technical assistance and financial incentives for farmers to reduce GHG emissions, sequester carbon and other environmental benefits.

Californians for Pesticide Reform – CPR is a dynamic statewide coalition founded in 1996 to protect public health, improve environmental quality and advance a sustainable and just agricultural system by building a diverse statewide movement to change local and statewide pesticide policies and practices.
